If the discoloration is widespread, it is generalized discoloration. But, if the discoloration is just on one side, it is segmental discoloration. Since the discoloration is affecting only one part of the skin, it is segmental. Apart from this, if there is discoloration in a few places, it is termed as focal discoloration. The affected skin may become hyperpigmented with dark patches or can even become hypopigmented. If you can explain the reason behind the discoloration, there is nothing to worry. For instance, it may happen that you underwent training under the sun and just did not use any sun block. Thus, your skin might have become darker due to excessive melanin. This is not the reason to worry. Secondly, you need to see closely if the color of the skin is changing or not. •    If you notice a lighter skin tone, it is the result of hypopigmentation

•    Darker skin color is the result of excessive melanin production.

•    There can be paleness of skin due to reduction in oxyhemoglobin

•    If your skin is prone to eczema, skin discoloration may show in the form of skin redness

•    Any kind of severe liver condition may show in the form of skin turning yellow

•    If the skin turns severely yellow, it becomes orange in color

•    You may also notice that the skin is turning blue. This is the type of skin discoloration resulting from Cyanosis.
